ADJUSTABLE STAIR INSTRUCTIONS
The System:
The adjustable step is a new approach to an old problem. The assembly should take 30-45 minutes after the first fw times; however, the first time will take longer. You must understand all aspects, limitations, and “tricks” of the adjustable step to assemble one; careful attention to the instructions will be necessary. Thereafter, you will only need the chart.
Parts:
Note: Second Handrail Package is one handrail and the corresponding number of balusters.
III. Tools Needed
Drill Driver with tips, tape measure, saw, and square.
IV. Stair Height:
Measure vertically from where the stair touches the ground© to the plane that extends from the top of the deck (B). Find the measurement (A) that corresponds closest to the chart. The preferred riser height is between 6.25” and 7.5”. Example: A37.5” (Would use a 4 tread(5 rise) 7.5” per rise stair, or 5 tread (6 rise) 6.25” per rise stair.
V. Assembly
The adjustable stair is based on the pre-punched pivot points on both sides each stringer. Not using these points for both treads and balusters will result in wasted time and effort. These points are on both sides of each stringer so that you may decide which side will be toward the stairs (inside) and which will face out and have the balusters attached to it.
Lay 1 stringer flat on a work surface with the inside facing up. Find the LOWER TREAD pivot point, spaced approximately 12 1/2” apart. Place 1 tread assembly on top of the stringer equals your desired riser height determined in step IV. Use remaining holes in brackets and screws to fasten to stringer. Repeat on remaining treads except; riser height is from top of tread to top of next lower tread which has been secured in place.
Cutting to the top of the stringers: Place a tri-square to the back of the top tread and draw a line perpendicular on each stringer. Slide the stair assembly to the edge of your work surface. Cut along this line. Place second stringer under the flat stringer. Match the stringer and mark the top of the second stringer. Cut along this line. (Make sure lengths of both stringers are the same.)
Place second stringer on work surface, turn exposed edges of tread over and on top of second stringer, matching first stringer end to end. Repeat process to match.
Set the stair:
Bring the stair assembly to the deck. Mark the riser measurement from the top of the deck, on the side of the deck. Then bring the top stair tread to that mark. Attach the stair stringers to the deck using the brackets provided. (4 –1 1/4” screws into each stringer and 2 – 4” lag bolts through the deck and
into each post behind.
Handrail and balusters:
Attach the balusters to the stringers into the baluster pivot points on the outside of the stringer with 2 1/4” screws. Use the bottom hole of the baluster. Do not use the other hole yet. Attach the handrail to the baluster using pivot points in the handrail. (Start at the bottom of the rail.) Then slide the handrail so that the excess handrail goes by the post and the balusters are level. Mark the handrail along the edge of the post, and cut off the excess (top) handrail, similar to the stringer. Use 3/16” drill bit to drill through the rail into the post. Put the remaining 2 1/4” screws into the middle hole of each baluster. Repeat process if double handrail is needed. If both stringers are not securely on the ground, you will need to either dig in one of them, or block one or both of them.
